The paint was extremely easy to apply – and the customer service was accessible and helpful! As a teacher you try to present as many different way as possible to to teach a concept and having the extra large dry erase wall helped us to teach concepts, facilitate games and student bonding and write instructions. We have no problem erasing everything with a multi purpose sponge eraser! It has been a HUGE learning tool for our classroom and we are forever grateful.

At any one time I work on 8-10 initiatives and your dry erase paint has enabled me to better visualize what I need to do. It’s useful for brainstorming and process evaluation, so much so that we’ve recently purchased it for our marketing department. It’s a great fit for our company.

As is the case with many inventions there is some contention over who the original inventor was. Most credit the invention of the whiteboard to Martin Heit in the late 1950s. Heit, a Korean War veteran, developed a whiteboard using melamine and steel, replacing the traditional chalkboard with a marker-based writing surface. In 2009, Smarter Surfaces began research and development of whiteboard paint, the next chapter for whiteboards.
In most cases, yes, you can paint over whiteboard paint. However, it's important to ensure proper adhesion and compatibility between the existing whiteboard paint and the new paint.
To clean stains, start by using a dry erase eraser or a soft cloth with a whiteboard cleaner. For tougher stains, apply Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover to the affected areas. This is a highly effective solution but should not be used for daily cleaning.

Standard whiteboard paint is not magnetic on its own. However, Smarter Surfaces offer a magnetic whiteboard paint. This product is designed so the surface is both magnetic and writable.
To achieve an excellent whiteboard finish, please:
  • Step 1 Preparation - Fill any imperfections on the surface using decorator filler, then sand the area to a smooth finish and eliminate any sanding dust. Apply two coats of White Primer and let this dry overnight before applying the whiteboard paint.
  • Step 2 Coverage - Make sure you have sufficient whiteboard paint to cover the entire area, as stretching the paint may impact its performance.
  • Step 3 Mix and apply - Combine parts A and B of the paint thoroughly and mix well. Then, using a new lint-free roller or foam roller, apply a generous and even coat by rolling over the surface several times to ensure complete coverage with no missed areas. After finishing a section, visually inspect to confirm there are no unpainted spots.
  • Step 4 Write, Draw and boost your collaboration using any standard whiteboard marker. Our award-winning Whiteboard Paint comes with a ten-year performance guarantee.
See our whiteboard wall paint installation video.
Each whiteboard paint kit comes with a roller specifically designed for use with Whiteboard Paint. For optimal results, we recommend using a mohair or lint-free short pile roller sleeve. If you choose a mohair roller, make sure to remove all loose fibres beforehand. A helpful trick is to use masking tape around the roller to pick up any loose fibres.
Whiteboard Paint can be applied to nearly any smooth surface (metal, concrete, glass, wood, etc.). If you plan to use Whiteboard Paint – Clear over a colour surface, we suggest using our Clear Primer for optimal performance. When using Whiteboard Paint – White, it's crucial to first apply a coat of White Primer or any good quality water-based white primer.
Whiteboard Paint Clear can be used over any colour except white, as this may tint the wall. For the best results, apply Whiteboard Paint White over a white surface.
Yes, for a whiteboard finish on glass apply Smarter Surfaces Primer first. For a transparent finish, apply Smart Whiteboard Paint Clear directly to the glass, or for a standard whiteboard finish apply Smart Whiteboard Paint. Alternatively consider our Self Adhesive Whiteboard Films which can be applied directly to glass.
Yes. Just ensure the surface is smooth prior to application. Fill any imperfections with filler. Apply White Primer before the Whiteboard Paint White (or use Clear Primer before applying Whiteboard Paint Clear). Sand after each layer of primer and reuse primer as required.
Yes, but only on smooth wallpaper. Avoid using it on textured wallpaper. If you want a white finish, apply two coats of Whiteboard Primer first. For a clear finish on porous wallpaper, use two coats of Clear Primer.
Yes, it can be used outdoors. Our whiteboard paint is tested to withstand temperatures as low as -16°C and is resistant to UV light. However, for optimal performance, apply it in a sheltered and dry area. Keep in mind that the paint should not be stored at temperatures below freezing for extended periods.
Whiteboard Paint is utilized in extremely hot climates worldwide, including the Middle East and Australia. Its UV resistance ensures that interior surfaces with Whiteboard Paint will not be yellow, even under the hottest conditions.
We don’t recommend it. Whiteboard Paint hasn’t been tested for slip resistance, and like any painted surface, it may wear down depending on foot traffic. Its durability is guaranteed only as a dry erase surface.
Whiteboard Paint serves as an excellent whiteboard repair solution for most surfaces. It can be directly applied onto existing whiteboards after White Primer is applied (note that a primer is essential before whiteboard paint application), just make sure all marker residues have been eliminated. For blackboards, it’s advisable to wipe the surface with a damp cloth to eliminate any leftover chalk. Then, cover the blackboard with White Primer before finally applying the Whiteboard Paint.
A primer helps give a surface a smooth finish. Secondly, they act to ‘seal’ a surface. This means that when you apply Smart Whiteboard Paint on a surface that has been primed, the properties within our whiteboard paint will stay on the wall rather than being absorbed into the wall. In summary, using a primer or sealer means you will get a smoother surface with optimum write-on-wipe-off functionality.
A standard fan heater can help speed up drying. Infrared lamps can also be used, but they should not be placed too close to the surface.
Yes, it’s completely safe. Our whiteboard paint is solvent-free, has very low VOC emissions (less than 12gl )and meets top environmental safety standards, including Fire Performance, LEED, M1, VOC, and Indoor Air Comfort certifications. Always wear the provided gloves when applying the paint.
Yes, our whiteboard paint is 100% isocyanate-free. Unlike some lower-quality alternatives, we never use isocyanates, which are hazardous and require strict safety procedures for handling.
Use the gloves included in the kit and wear safety glasses. As with any painting project, ensure proper ventilation in the room.
No, our whiteboard paint is not flammable and meets fire safety certifications, making it safe for use in schools and offices. It has a high flashpoint above 158°F.
Yes! It’s safe to use around both adults and children. Our paint has extremely low VOC emissions and no isocyanates, ensuring a safe application environment with minimal odour.
There are two effective ways to remove whiteboard paint from your skin. One method is to mix salt with warm water and rinse your hands thoroughly. Alternatively, you can use sand soap, a specialized cleaning product available at most auto parts stores.
Whiteboard Paint spills can be cleaned using any Xylene-based cleaner, which is widely available in DIY and automotive stores. However, please note that Xylene-based cleaners should not be used on the skin.
To keep your whiteboard surface clean, simply wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth. For a more thorough cleaning, you can use any standard whiteboard cleaning spray. If you encounter stubborn marks, we recommend using our Permanent Ink Remover. For the first 30 days after application, clean your surface daily with the provided microfiber cloth. After this period, a deep clean with a standard whiteboard cleaner once a week is recommended.
This issue is usually caused by improper application or by attempting to stretch the paint over a larger area than recommended. To ensure optimal results, always follow the Whiteboard Paint application guide, as the formula is designed to cover a specific surface area per kit.
For tough marks, we suggest using our Permanent Ink Remover, a powerful cleaning solution designed for difficult stains (not for everyday use). If you're experiencing persistent issues, please send a photo of the affected area along with your order number and surface size (in square meters) to [email protected] for further assistance.
Frequent use of alcohol-based cleaners may damage the whiteboard surface and reduce its effectiveness over time. To maintain the best results, we recommend using our specially formulated cleaning products which are designed to protect and prolong the life of your surface.
No, just like a standard whiteboard, Whiteboard Paint is not designed for use with permanent markers. If the permanent marker is accidentally used, our Permanent Ink Remover can help erase it.
You can try writing over the permanent marker with a whiteboard marker, which helps re-wet the ink and makes it easier to wipe away. Let it sit for two minutes before wiping it off. If this method doesn’t work, use our Permanent Ink Remover a specialized solution designed to remove tough stains, including permanent marker and ghosting.
Yes, Dry Erase Paint comes in two finishes: white and clear. The clear option allows you to maintain the original colour or design of your wall while still enjoying the benefits of a writable surface.
Whiteboard paint can serve as a projection surface when used with short throw projectors, even though it wasn't specifically intended for that use. Numerous education and business clients have adopted whiteboard paint for both projection and whiteboard applications. For optimal projection quality, we suggest using one of our dedicated projection screen solutions.
If you observe a 'hotspot' on the surface, simply adjust the angle of your projector to remove it. For a high-quality projector surface, we recommend our Projector Paints. If you need a surface that functions as both a projector and whiteboard, consider our Whiteboard Wallpaper Low Sheen.
Absolutely, we suggest using our Super Magnetic Paint or Magnetic Plaster. For a quickly installed magnetic and writable option, opt for our Magnetic Whiteboard Wallpaper instead. Learn more here.
Use your whiteboard surface with any normal whiteboard markers and accessories. We recommend keeping the surface clean and not leaving the ink overnight if possible, especially for the first month. After the first month, periodically remove the build-up of marker residue with a standard whiteboard cleaner.
