How to Apply Whiteboard Wallpaper
Before applying the wallpaper, make sure to cover the floor with plastic or other suitable protection material and then follow the below steps.

Step 1 - Surface Prep
Check and fill any holes or cracks in the surface with a normal decorator’s filler

Step 2 - Apply Primer
Absorbent surfaces should be treated with a primer, such as White Primer, before applying Dry Erase Wallpaper.

Step 3 - Apply Adhesive
Add 10% water to the adhesive if needed and mix well. Apply two coats to the wall, letting the first dry before applying the second.

FAQ's
General Product Questions
Can Whiteboard Wallpaper be installed on any surface?
Yes, best whiteboard wallpaper can be applied to any smooth surface and can also adhere to curved walls. Before installation, make sure to remove any debris or existing wallpaper. If the surface is absorbent, apply a primer beforehand for optimal results.
How to convert a normal wall into dry erase board?
Choose Dry Erase Board Wallpaper to create a high-quality, non-ghosting whiteboard surface. It is applied similarly to standard wallpaper and functions like a conventional whiteboard, only on a larger scale.
What is the difference between whiteboard wallpaper and whiteboard paint?
The key differences lies in the application method and performance. Whiteboard wallpaper offers several advantages over paint: guaranteed consistent coverage, easy removal without surface damage, and no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or strong odours.
Whiteboard paint is initially less expensive, but it requires multiple coats and professional application for best results and permanent commitment to the surface. Paint may also turn yellow over time and become harder to erase, making wallpaper the preferred choice for professional areas requiring reliable, long-term performance.
What types of wallpapers are available?
At Smarter Surfaces, we have four types of writable wall covering available:
- Whiteboard Wallpaper gives whiteboard functionality with a gloss look.
- Magnetic Whiteboard Wallpaper gives a whiteboard and magnetic gloss look.
- Projector Whiteboard Wallpaper (2-in-1) offers projector and whiteboard functionality with a low sheen finish.
Magnetic Projector Screen Whiteboard Wallpaper (3 in 1) with low sheen that provides projector, magnetic and whiteboard functionality.
Application & Usage
What kind of markers can be used on Whiteboard Wallpapers?
Any high-quality, non-permanent whiteboard markers, including those in our collection, can be utilised.
What glue to use for whiteboard wall covering?
Whiteboard wall covering can be applied using a ready-mixed heavy-duty wallpaper adhesive. Simply apply the adhesive to the wall using a roller and then apply the best whiteboard wallpaper.
How to hide dry erase board wallpaper seams?
At the joint, overlap the dry-erase vinyl and double-cut right through with a sharp blade. This will minimise the appearance of seams on your whiteboard surface.
What direction should I hang my whiteboard wallpaper?
Whiteboard Wallpapers can be hung horizontally or vertically, depending on your preference. We recommend hanging the writing wallpaper horizontally to minimise seams on writing areas.
Surface Prep & Priming
Is priming necessary before applying Dry Erase Wallpaper?
Not necessary. Priming is only required for absorbent surfaces to ensure proper adhesion. If the surface is uneven, applying a primer can help create a smoother finish.
Functionality & Performance
Are there different sizes available?
Whiteboard Wallpaper available in 2m², 5m² and 10m².
What is the gloss level of Whiteboard Wallpapers?
Whiteboard Wallpapers have a gloss measurement of 98 GU at a 60-degree angle.
Can I use permanent markers on Dry Erase Board Wallpaper?
No, Dry Erase Board Whiteboard Wallpaper, like traditional whiteboards, is not designed for use with permanent markers.
If a permanent marker is used by mistake, we recommend using our Permanent Ink Remover to clean the surface effectively.
Cleaning & Maintenance
How do I clean my whiteboard wall covering?
You can clean your whiteboard with a dry or slightly damp cloth. For a more effortless clean, use a standard Whiteboard Cleaning Spray. If you need to remove stubborn marks, we recommend using our Permanent Ink Remover.
After the first 30 days from application, clean the surface daily with the provided Microfibre Cloth. After 30 days, a thorough weekly cleaning with a standard whiteboard cleaner is suggested.
How can I remove the permanent marker from my whiteboard?
You may be able to lift permanent marker ink by writing over it using a whiteboard marker.
This helps rehydrate the ink, making it easier to wipe away. Wait two minutes, then clean the surface. If this method doesn’t work, use our Permanent Ink Remover available from our web store.
This specialised cleaner is designed to tackle permanent marker stains, stubborn marks, and ghosting on whiteboards surfaces.
Safety & Environmental
Is it safe to use alcohol to clean Whiteboard Wallpaper?
Frequent use of alcohol-based cleaners may damage the surface and impact performance.
To ensure the best results and maintain the durability of writable wall covering, we recommend using the specially formulated cleaning solution products.
