FAQ's
General Product Questions
Is there a paint that acts like a whiteboard?
Yes, Smarter Surfaces White Whiteboard Paint acts like a whiteboard. It can be applied to smooth surfaces such as walls or desks, creating a dry erase area where you can write, draw, and erase.
Can you paint a whiteboard?
Yes, you can paint a whiteboard using this Whiteboard Paint. It transforms any smooth surface into a custom-sized, functional whiteboard for collaboration.
For refurbishing old whiteboards or chalkboards, consider our peel-and-stick Self Adhesive Whiteboard Films for quick installation.
Can you paint over whiteboard paint?
In most cases, yes, you can paint over the whiteboard paint. However, it's important to ensure proper adhesion and compatibility between the existing paint and the new paint.
Is whiteboard paint magnetic?
Standard whiteboard paint is not magnetic on its own. However, we offer a magnetic whiteboard paint. This product is designed so that the surface is both magnetic and writable.
Are there different colour options for dry erase paint?
Yes, Dry Erase Paint comes in two finishes: white and clear. The clear option allows you to maintain the original colour or design of your wall while still enjoying the benefits of a writable surface.
Application & Usage
How to use your whiteboard surface?
Use your whiteboard surface with any normal whiteboard markers and accessories. We recommend keeping the surface clean and not leaving the ink overnight if possible, especially for the first month. After the first month, periodically remove the build-up of marker residue with a standard whiteboard cleaner.
Can white dry erase paint be used on all surfaces?
Yes, white dry erase paint can be applied to nearly any smooth surface (metal, concrete, glass, wood, etc.). When using White Whiteboard Paint, it's crucial to first apply a coat of White Primer or any good quality water-based white primer.
Can you use dry erase paint on wood?
Yes. Just ensure the surface is smooth prior to application. Fill any imperfections with filler. Apply White Primer before the Whiteboard Paint White (or use Clear Primer before applying Whiteboard Paint Clear). Sand after each layer of primer and reuse primer as required.
Can you apply whiteboard paint over the wallpaper?
Yes, but only on smooth wallpaper. Avoid using it on textured wallpaper. If you want a white finish, apply two coats of White Primer first. For a clear finish on porous wallpaper, use two coats of Clear Primer.
Can I paint an existing blackboard with Whiteboard Paint?
Yes, you can paint over an existing blackboard. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any leftover chalk, then apply White Primer to ensure proper adhesion. Once the primer has dried, apply the Whiteboard Paint.
Can whiteboard paint be applied to floors?
We don’t recommend it. Whiteboard Paint hasn’t been tested for slip resistance, and like any painted surface, it may wear down depending on foot traffic. Its durability is guaranteed only as a dry erase surface.
Is whiteboard paint suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, it can be used outdoors. Our whiteboard paint is tested to withstand temperatures as low as -16°C and is resistant to UV light. However, for optimal performance, apply it in a sheltered and dry area.
What type of heater can speed up the drying process? Can I use an infrared lamp?
A standard fan heater can help speed up drying. Infrared lamps can also be used, but they should not be placed too close to the surface.
Can I use permanent markers on dry erase board paint?
No, just like a standard whiteboard, dry erase board paint is not designed for use with permanent markers. If the permanent marker is accidentally used, Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover can help erase it.
Is it possible to utilize whiteboard paint as a projection screen?
Yes, whiteboard paint can serve as a projection surface. But it will not deliver optimal projection results, as it is not designed for that purpose. In such cases, we recommend using Matte Whiteboard Paint or Low Sheen Whiteboard Wallpaper, which are engineered specifically for projection and writable surfaces.
Is it possible to use Magnetic Paint with Whiteboard Paint?
Yes. You can apply Magnetic Paint, Super Magnetic Paint or Magnetic Plaster depending on the required strength of the surface. We also offer different Magnetic solutions for various purposes.
Surface Prep & Priming
What's the best roller for Whiteboard Paint?
Each of our whiteboard paint kits comes with a roller specifically designed for use with the paint. For optimal results, we recommend using a high quality mohair, foam or lint-free short-pile roller sleeve. If you choose a mohair roller, make sure to remove all loose fibres beforehand. A helpful trick is to use masking tape around the roller to pick up any loose fibres.
Why is it required to apply primer before applying Whiteboard Paint?
A primer helps give a surface a smooth finish. Secondly, they act as a ‘seal’ to the surface. This means that when you apply Whiteboard Wall Paint on a surface that has been primed, the properties of the paint will stay on the wall rather than being absorbed into the wall.
In summary, using a primer or sealer means you will get a smoother surface with optimum write-on-wipe-off functionality.
Functionality & Performance
Does whiteboard paint really work?
Yes, whiteboard paint is designed to turn any surface into a whiteboard. Smarter Surfaces Whiteboard Paint creates a smooth, erasable surface, works well with all types of dry erase markers, and comes with a 10-year guarantee. Proper application will ensure optimal performance.
How long does dry erase paint last?
Smarter Surfaces Dry Erase Paint lasts up to 10 years with proper application and moderate use. The lifespan depends on factors like surface preparation, paint quality, and frequency of writing and erasing. High-traffic areas may show wear sooner, while well-maintained surfaces in light-use environments can last towards the longer end of this range.
Will the walls turn yellow in sunlight?
Whiteboard Paint is utilized in extremely hot climates worldwide, including the Middle East and Australia. Its UV resistance ensures that interior surfaces with Whiteboard Paint will not be yellow, even under the hottest conditions.
Will there be a reflective glare?
If you observe a 'hotspot' on the surface, simply adjust the angle of your projector to remove it. For a high-quality projector surface, we recommend our Projector Paints. If you need a surface that functions as both a projector and whiteboard, consider our Projector Whiteboard Wallpaper.
Cleaning & Maintenance
How do I clean my whiteboard surface?
To keep your whiteboard surface clean, simply wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth. For a more thorough cleaning, you can use any standard whiteboard cleaning spray. If you encounter stubborn marks, we recommend using our Permanent Ink Remover. For the first 30 days after application, clean your surface daily with the provided microfiber cloth. After this, a deep clean with a standard whiteboard cleaner once a week is recommended.
Why are there shadows or large marks on my whiteboard surface?
This issue is usually caused by improper application or by attempting to stretch the paint over a larger area than recommended. To ensure optimal results, always follow the application guide, as the formula is designed to cover a specific surface area per kit.
Can I clean my whiteboard surface with alcohol?
Yes, once in a while, it is okay to use alcohol to clean the surface. But, frequent use of alcohol-based cleaners may damage the whiteboard surface and reduce its effectiveness over time. To maintain the best results, we recommend using our specially formulated cleaning products, which are designed to protect and prolong the life of your surface.
How do I remove permanent markers from my whiteboard surface?
You can try writing over the permanent marker with a whiteboard marker, which helps re-wet the ink and makes it easier to wipe away. Let it sit for two minutes before wiping it off. If this method doesn’t work, use Permanent Ink Remover a specialized solution designed to remove tough stains, including permanent marker and ghosting.
Safety & Environmental
Is whiteboard paint safe to use?
Yes, it’s completely safe. Smarter Surfaces whiteboard paint is solvent-free, has very low VOC emissions (less than 12g/l )and meets top environmental safety standards, including Fire Performance, LEED, M1, VOC, and Indoor Air Comfort certifications. Always wear the provided gloves when applying the paint.
Is whiteboard paint free from isocyanates?
Yes, Smarter Surfaces Dry Erase Board Paint is 100% isocyanate-free. Unlike some lower-quality alternatives available in Australia, we never use isocyanates, which are hazardous and require strict safety procedures for handling.
What protective gear should I wear when applying whiteboard paint?
Use the gloves included in the kit and wear safety glasses. As with any painting project, ensure proper ventilation in the room.
Is whiteboard paint flammable?
No, our whiteboard paint is not flammable and meets fire safety certifications, making it safe for use in schools and offices. It has a high flashpoint above 158°F.
Can whiteboard paint be applied in occupied spaces?
Yes! It’s safe to use around both adults and children. Smarter Surfaces paint has extremely low VOC emissions and no isocyanates, ensuring a safe application environment with minimal odour.
How to remove whiteboard paint from my skin?
There are two effective ways to remove the paint from your skin. One method is to mix salt with warm water and rinse your hands thoroughly. Alternatively, you can use sand soap, a specialized cleaning product available at most auto parts stores.
What should I do if I spill white whiteboard paint?
Paint spills can be cleaned using any Xylene-based cleaner, which is widely available in DIY and automotive stores. However, please note that Xylene-based cleaners should not be used on the skin.
